In this presentation I will critically discuss the case of Jerusalem as a settler colonial urban space where architecture, urban design and planning are used as a tool of control. The main theoretical argument to be articulated is that the geopolitics of settler colonial cities have to do with a crossing of scales – from the neighbourhood scale to the city level and then to the colonial apparatuses of the state. This has to do with the impact of borders and territoriality, constructed spatially and politically, which is not diminishing; rather we should pay attention to new scales of paradoxical territorial affiliations and borders that may be flexible but that are still selective on different scales.

Haim Yacobi is a Professor of Development Planning at the Bartlett Development Planning Unit, UCL and the Programme Leader of the MSc Health in Urban Development. The main issues that stand in the center of his research interest in relation to the urban space are social justice, health, and colonial planning. His latest books are “Rethinking Israeli Space: Periphery and Identity” (Routledge 2011 with Erez Tzfadia) and “Israel\Africa: a genealogy of moral geography” (Routledge 2016).
