Public lecture [EN] [AGRIVISIONS - PROJ-Px314] | Modernizing the Countryside: Architecture, Cooperatives, and Rural Planning in 1960s Venezuela - Ricardo Avella (TU Delft, Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment)

Publié le 1 octobre 2026 – Mis à jour le 1 octobre 2026

In the 1960s, Venezuela’s agrarian reform sought not only to redistribute land among landless peasants, but to radically transform rural life through new forms of settlement, rural housing, infrastructure, and agricultural organization. Focusing on Las Majaguas, a large-scale irrigation project shaped by Israeli rural planning expertise and the moshav model of cooperative settlement, this lecture examines how architects and planners helped translate ambitions of modernization and social emancipation into a territorial and architectural project. The case also offers a critical lens through which to consider architecture’s capacity (and limits) to organize collective life.
